First in the "Tension on a Pension" cozy mystery series
"The cast of Jewish senior sleuths made me laugh out loud." Anne Kleinberg, best-selling author of "Menopause in Manhattan"
"A brilliant setting for a wickedly funny book." Linda Matchan, journalist, "The Boston Globe"
"This book kept me absorbed and entertained all the way through. The denouement really was a surprise." Judy Weidman, librarian
"Long in the Sleuth" combines humor, romance and suspense with a unique angle--a quirky team of seniors trying to adjust to life in a retirement home, while people are dropping dead all around them.
Who killed Sam Levin with a poisoned knish? Could it be Ellie, who baked it? The yentas at the Menorah Retirement Home think that it just might be.
Ellie Shapiro is a reluctant resident of the Minnie and Isaac Memorial Menorah Retirement home. Then Sam, a popular fellow resident, drops dead after eating a knish that Ellie's baked. Other murders follow. With her fellow sleuths and Sam's hapless teen-age grandson Noah, plus a dog, Ellie sets out to find the killer.
But will the disapproval of Ellie's hunky crush, Hal, stop the motley detection team before the killer gets her?
Over the course of the book, Ellie gains confidence, a friend, a new career and maybe even the guy, as the action takes her from the Menorah kitchens to an out-of-control fight at a mahjong game and a revelatory visit to gambling casino, culminating in a confrontation with a crazed murderer.
Ellie's recipes included.
If you loved Agatha Christie's Miss Marple, the Golden Girls and Harry Kemelman's Rabbi Small, you won't want to miss "Long in the Sleuth."

Long in the Sleuth A Tension on a Pension Mystery Volume 1 Carol Novis Books

There were many things that made this book engaging, but the fact that it was filled with people who seemed familiar to me was a big part. My mother spend her last years in a senior citizens residence, a not-quite-as-lavish residence a couple of hundred miles west of Aurora, MN, where the Menorah home was, but similar in many ways -- although not nearly as murderous! Menorah was, as protagonist Ellie tell us, much like seventh grade, with it's cliques and groups, the socialites, the Bridge players, the mean girls, the ones who liked to trick the staff into getting two dinners -- and plenty of regular people, the kind who make up that "Minnesota nice" contingent so common in the upper Midwest. There was even a rare male "cock of the walk" in my mother's retirement home, a man like Sam in many ways, who was a little full of himself, taking advantage of all the attention lavished on him, given the fact that reasonably engaging men were so rare. I'm not sure where Ms. Novis did her "retirement home" research, but she nailed it!

"Long in the Sleuth" has a solid murder-mystery plot -- I didn't figure out who "did it", but then I rarely do -- and realistic dialogue, but as a plus, I giggled my way through the whole thing. Ellie, the protagonist, has a slightly wicked sense of humor, and her observations about life and her fellow residents at Menorah, are funny and memory-provoking. I hadn't thought about "Fire and Ice" lipstick for probably 40 years, but hearing Ellie mention it made me remember when I had my first tube, and thought I was really something. Then too, Ellie loves to eat -- and bake -- so we get mouth water descriptions of all sorts of goodies, along with recipes in the back -- the Cottage Cheese Muffins look like a real winner. And of course there's a dog, an overly-energetic Jack Russell Terrier that someone slips and refers to as a "Jack Daniels" terrier -- which puts a whole new face on that dog breed.

This was a perfect "cozy" -- just the right amount of suspense, a bit of not-too-gory murder, no bad language, with interesting characters, witty commentary and good recipes! I've already bought the sequel -- can't wait to see what Ellie, Riva, Noah, Hal and Shultz, the dog get up to next.

Long in the Sleuth A Tension on a Pension Mystery Volume 1 Carol Novis Books Reviews

I enjoyed the implausible antics of this bunch of alter kachers (old folks), plus the inclusion of a teenager in their amateur sleuthing. It isn't all implausible, though. Just enough to keep things light hearted, while touching on topics as diverse as the Holocaust, senior romance, and food, recipes included. And yes, there is a good story with a satisfying ending.
Cute book, especially if you're versed in Yiddish and like reading about older sleuths. However, I couldn't give it 5 stars because there's a glaring error in the book. Ms. Novis says something about Sam and Mollie being killed, but at that point, only Sam and Maurice had been killed. Oops.
What fun! A cast of characters that could have been my aunts and uncles. I thoroughly enjoyed following the exploits of the residents of Menorah retirement home the cliques, the gossip, the mah Jong, the early bird specials. Carol Novis has created a wonderful new entry in the genre of cozy mysteries and it comes with recipes to some of my favorite Eastern European foods-- an unexpected bonus. I'm rooting for Ellie to continue building her self-confidence and for this group of older men and women to enjoy many more exploits together.
Nice story about an older sleuth who is a resident of the Menorah Retirement home.

The characters are well developed, and the mystery was suitably puzzling.

As might be gathered from the name of the home, most of the characters are Jewish, and eat delicious kugels and blintzes, baked by the main character. She and her new friend, investigate murders at the home as well!

I await the next installment, but in the meantime, will nosh on some of the recipes included in the book.

Enjoy!

Shoylock and Ms Marplestein (aka Ellie Shapiro and Riva Mannheim) are assisted by Schultz (a terrier reminiscent of Asta), "Dr" Vahtson (aka archivist Hal) and the teenaged grandson of the first victim on several occasions. Most of the action takes place in the Menorah, a senior residence where everyone has a suite and no serious nursing care is needed (unlike the places where I once worked).
Lots of sleuthing and fun, with some delicious recipes at the end.
I found this fun cozy by accident, and am I glad I did!
I took a while to start reading this book because it was not by a favorite author and didn’t look compelling
But when I started reading...I found it interesting on several levels
There is the retirement home environment and the Jewish/Yiddish element added to some familiar-seemimg characters
It’s not a thriller nor a psychological teaser...and the plot and characters behavior could ur some work
But I really enjoyed the book and look forward to another in what may be a series
I really enjoyed this book. It had a good combination of murder, laughter with some light sadness. The author did a very good job of explaining the Jewish customs and food as they related to the story. There really was no tension and it was easy to figure who the killer was, but it was such a good read, I didn't care.

The only disappointment to me was that the author took the modern path of using some bad language - not often, but it was there. For those of us who care about that, it can be a turn off. So for me, I probably will not read another of her books, and for that I am sad.
